Why Are There So Many Godzilla Toys And Action Figures To Look For?

February 12, 2010 by · 5 Comments

A lot of science fiction and horror films and comic books spawn toys relating to those titles. An exceptionally popular movie character turned toy figure is Godzilla. Initially introduced in Japan in the 1950s, Godzilla has accomplished a global cult following. Thousands of figures in Godzilla’s resemblance have been designed. If you like this fire-breathing ancient giant, odds are you need to collect the vast Godzilla action figures ever made.

Whether you call him Godzilla or Gojira, there is no argument that the giant green lizard is perhaps Japan’s greatest import, at least beside Hello Kitty and that Asahi beer. Originally a menacing monster and symbol for the nuclear bomb, Godzilla altered over the years since he debuted in 1954, as director Eji Tsuburaya realised that his largest group of followers were kids, with all of their lovely licensing dollars.

Kaiju collecting can quickly become a very pricey as well as addicting hobby. Since the 1960s the kaiju collector has had a growing number of toys to use their hard earned money on, and for most fans, the best bit of enjoying a collection is to search for that extraordinary poster, lobby, card, tin toy, etc. Oddly enough, the primary collectible Godzilla toy was not even created in Japan, but was the America model set made by Aurora. For many a fan though, the most liked searched for collectible isn’t that hard to find poster, CD or model kit. For many a fan, the most liked and widely collected Godzilla toys are the vinyl Godzilla toys which have stayed popular for over three decades.

History of the Silk Kimono

September 18, 2009 by · 3 Comments

Although the kimono originated in China, they have been worn in Japan for hundreds of years, and their great beauty is attributable to 17th and 18th century Japanese designers.

Traditionally, the cloth and color combinations indicated the political and social standing of the wearer and kimono colors changed according to the time of year. These days, the kimono is no longer a purely traditional garment.

Traditionally, all girls in Japan had to learn to make their own clothes and sew. But sewing was easier than in the west. The girdle, haori and kimono, and even the long-hanging sleeves, had only parallel seams. The clothes were, in fact, taken apart for cleaning, and each piece, after being mildly starched, was stretched out on a board to dry, before being stitched back together.

There are many different kinds of kimono pattern: the long-sleeved, beautiful kinds worn by young girls or geisha, the formal kimono stamped with the wearer’s family emblem and worn on formal occasions; men’s kimonos and kimono for children. A young woman wears a kimono with long sleeves and an Obi, a broad brocade or silk band about twelve feet long and twelve inches wide. As she gets older, the kimonos become smaller and the colors richer and deeper while the obi is made narrower and worn deeper. In addition, haori, a short knee length kimono, is often worn too. These days, a kimono is usually only donned on special occasions and is primarily worn by women, but certain men also wear this garb. Both haori and kimono may be hung on a hard wood bar as wall decoration.

As an indulgence or ideal gift, kimono clothing is extremely versatile, and makes a welcome addition to any wardrobe.

Possibly the most popular color for a kimono is red, derived from safflower. The yukata has much in common with the kimono, except it is made of a lightweight cotton and is more casual.

Tell me about the Akita Dog

September 5, 2009 by · 3 Comments

Before deciding to bring home that cute Akita puppy, you should know a little about the breed. The Akita is a proud member of the working group. This dog has a bold, independent personality, and is highly devoted to its family. Rated as one of the best watchdogs a man can own, the Akita will protect its family members at all costs, which makes it highly reserved around strangers and other animals.

A Brief History Of The Akita

The Akita dog breed has its origins from Japan. In fact, the breed’s roots can be found on ancient Japanese tombs, which show us that today’s Akita is the result of concerted efforts of the 19th century to recreate seven of Japan’s native breeds. The dogs used for these breeding efforts were mostly fighting breeds, some purebred and some mixed.

In time, Japanese breeders worked hard to separate many of the traits from these fighting dogs out of the Akita, specifically the pinto pattern, black mask, and the dog’s incredible size. However, American breeders were enthusiastic about these traits and actually encouraged them. To preserve the original Akita, the Akita-inu Hozankai Society of Japan was formed in 1918. Just over a decade later, in 1931, the Akita was declared an official monument in Japan.

The most recognized story of the Akita breed us about a dog named Hachiko. Hachiko had met his owner each and every day at the train station after work. When the owner died at work one afternoon, Hachiko waited for him to return, at that very spot, until the dog died – 9 years later!

The first Akita dog made its way to the United States in 1937. The famous Helen Keller was the woman who brought this Akita to America when she returned from Japan that year. When World War II was over, many Akita dogs also came back to the U.S. with members of the armed forces when returning home from battle. The AKC officially recognized the breed in 1972.

Upkeep Requirements For The Akita

The Akita dog enjoys living with owners that have an active lifestyle. They need mental and physical exercise on a daily basis, preferably having the chance to run long distances in a safe area or a moderate jog on the leash. So long as they have ample amounts of exercise, Akita dogs remain well-mannered when indoors.

These dogs have an unusual tolerance for cold weather and can live outdoors in colder climates (they do not fare well in hot temperatures). But like all house pets, they are most happy when sleeping inside with the family at night. Grooming requirements call for a thorough brushing about once per week to remove dead hair, especially during shedding season.

Health Concerns

Akita dogs have an average life span of ten to twelve years. The two major health problems that run common in the breed are PRA and CHD. Minor health concerns include gastric torsion, elbow dysplasia, sebaceous adenitis, hypothyroidism, lymphosarcoma, osteosarcoma, pemphigus, and cruciate ligament rupture. Veterinarians suggest that Akita dogs get tested for potential eye, hip, elbow, and thyroid problems.

Reduce Hypertension With Reishi Mushroom

June 2, 2009 by · 5 Comments

Reishi mushrooms has been shown to contain complex sugars that have anticancer and immune stimulating properties. For example, complex sugars known as beta-glucans have been shown in laboratory experiments to inhibit the growth and metastasis of cancer cells. When animals were fed beta-glucans, certain aspects of their immune system become more active. Limited data from clinical studies suggest Reishi mushroom can strengthen the immune responses in humans.

In addition, reishi mushrooms contain sterols that can act as precursors to hormones in the body, along with substances called triterpenes that may have blood pressure lowering and anti allergy (anti histamine) effects. Reishi mushrooms have also been shown to slow the process of blood clotting.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is particularly beneficial for individuals with asthma and other respiratory complaints. “It has a healing effect on the lungs,” she says. “Reishi is good for respiratory strength and for coughing”. At least one population study confirms this claim. When more the 2000 Chinese with chronic bronchitis took reishi syrup during the 1970s, within two weeks, 60 to 90% felt better and reported an improved appetite, according to “Medicinal mushrooms,” by Christopher Hobbs, published in “s for Health, Jan/Feb 97.

For 4000 years, the Chinese and Japanese have used reishi mushroom as a medicine for liver disorders, hypertension, and arthritis. Through in vitro and human studies, today’s researchers have found that reishi has anti allergic, anti inflammatory, anti viral, anti bacterial, and antioxidant properties. In vitro experiments also indicate that reishi may help fight cancer tumors. In addition, a protein isolated from reishi may reduce the risk of transplant rejection.

The reishi mushroom is a purplish brown fungus with a long stalk, brown spores, and a fan-shaped cap with a shiny, varnish coated appearance. Reishi grows on decaying wood or tree stumps, preferring the Japanese plum tree but also found on oak. The mushroom is native to China, Japan, and North America but is cultivated throughout other Asian countries. Cultivation of reishi is a long, complicated process. The reishi grows in 6 colors, each thought to have different characteristics and known as: Aoshiba (blue reishi), Akashiba (red reishi), Kishiba (yellow reishi), Shiroshiba (white reishi), Kuroshiba (black reishi), and Murasakishiba (purple reishi).

Reishi has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more years for treating fatigue and to promote longevity. The Chinese name lingzhi means “herb of spiritual potency.” A Japanese name for the reishi is mannentake, meaning “10,000-year-old mushroom.” Reishi’s use is documented in the oldest Chinese medical text, which is more than 2,000 years old. Cultivation of reishi began in the 1980s. A survey conducted in Hong Kong found G. lucidum to be the third most common herbal preparation taken by preoperative surgical patients.

Reishi mushroom can be found in capsule or tablet forms at your local or internet health food store. Look for name brands like Solaray brand and Planetary Herbals to ensure quality and purity of the product you purchase.

All About Forex Trading

May 5, 2009 by · 3 Comments

Oil, Gold and the foreign currency exchange market are three different markets that are reliant on each other. If you want to learn about Forex trading, knowing what one does may give you an insight where the other markets may be going. It would be greatly advantageous to become familiar with those different markets as a trader and get some Forex education.

Let’s have a look at those markets and how they are all connected.

GOLD
There is an inverse correlation for markets such as gold or oil that are priced in U.S. dollars in the finance world. When the U.S. dollar drops, not only do foreign currencies increase in value, but gold prices also rise. Studies have shown a negative correlation between gold and the dollar that is, they almost never move in in-step, but almost always move in opposite directions.

The value of EUR/USD versus gold, on the other hand, shows a very high positive correlation, this means that the value of the euro and gold prices often go hand-in-hand, suggesting these markets are both beneficiaries when funds are flowing away from the U.S. dollar.

Gold prices may be considered as an important component in the analysis of the forex market. A trend change in gold price may give a good clue to where the US dollar may be heading in the foreign exchange market.

OIL
A rise in crude prices directly relates to a weakness in the US. Foreign oil producers view the increase in oil prices as a way to maintain their purchasing power in U.S. dollar terms. Forex brokers will tell you to counter the impact of higher oil prices a weaker dollar could ultimately give rise to inflation.

Oil is a key commodity driving global economic growth, and oil prices and the foreign exchange have a key relationship in the global market.

Now lets have a look at the impact an increase in oil prices may have on the different major currencies around the world.

Japan: Economy suffers as it relies on imports for most of its energy needs, therefore the Yen weakens.

UK: Benefit the economy as UK produces oil. British pound strengthens.

Oil in world business has a heavy impact on the Forex market. Thus any disturbance in supply is likely to affect the foreign exchange market.

Some of these factors may be terrorist attacks, natural disasters and wars. In such circumstances a shift from the dollar to the euro as the designated currency in crude oil could occur thus causing an immediate decline in the value of the U.S. dollar.

Gold and oil are not the only commodities affected by changes in forex values. Exports of agricultural commodities account for a large share of U.S. farm income.

When the value of the dollar rises, it tends to limit buying interest from an importing nation as the commodity becomes too expensive in terms of that nation’s domestic currency.

When the value of the dollar declines, it reduces the price to an importing nation in terms of its currency and encourages it to buy more U.S. agricultural products.

The influence that one market has on another market naturally shifts over time so these relationships are not static but should be the subject of ongoing study.

You as a Forex trader should be aware of the impact that those different markets have on the Forex. Though the changes may not be instantaneous, it may however tip you off on any possible trend changes in the near future.  Happy trading. BSFT220409

I-20 Visas

March 18, 2009 by · 7 Comments

How to study in the United States as a Foreign Student

So you want to study at a university in the United States, but you are a citizen of another country. Students from countries such as Korea, Japan, China, India, and others regularly study in the United States by obtaining a visa from a school that is authorized to issue I-20 visas. I-20 visas are what allow foreign students to study in the United States legally.

One question to consider early on is whether you wish to apply to a United States university directly from the high school in your country, or whether you wish to attend a college preparatory (high school) in the United States. A major benefit of attending college prep in the United States is that they often already have built strong relationships with the university you wish to attend. For example, the University of California system, in many cases, has already pre-approved transferrable courses at high schools accredited by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges). Such high schools are already familiar with the admission requirements of various universities, as well.

When looking at high schools in the United States, you should make sure that their affiliations connect them with top tier universities. But more importantly, you need to make sure that the high school you are considering is authorized to issue I-20 visas to foreign students.

Becoming authorized to issue I-20 visas to foreign students is a process managed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It requires a lengthy review of the school petitioning for approval, so be sure the school you are considering has already obtained this approval before spending much time on their application process.

Spending an extra four years at a United States private college prep school, can pay off big time when it comes to getting into top Universities.
