Artificial Grass and Turf

January 19, 2010 by · 2 Comments

I was recently in Las Vegas and found out that Lake Mead was below 50% of capacity. I found out that the city has actually banned the planting of real grass. I thought this was a bit strange since all of the casinos as well as all of the medians in the roads have real grass planted in them.

Then I took a closer look and found out that the grass at the casinos and the medians is actually fake grass. My curiosity was raised and I asked a few questions. It seems that “Supply and Demand” has once again come to the rescue. The demand has really spiked in California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico where they have various bans on planting real grass. Demand is definitely up, so the free market has moved in with ever increasing quality goods.

Some cities in the Western parts of the US are actually paying their residents good money (over $1.00 per square foot) to remove their real grass and replace it with natural landscaping or artificial grass.

I’ll have to say that I am considering replacing my lawn with artificial grass now. The looks of this stuff is so real that you have to get down on all fours and look at the base to see if it’s real grass or not.

It looks to me, at least based on the pictures I have seen, that the best looking and most real looking grass comes from only one company. The best looking artificial grass I have ever seen. Take a look at the pictures and you will be amazed. They also make outdoor putting greens too. As a golfer my curiosity is aroused and I will have to do some checking on this too.

Nursing in the 21st Century.

December 27, 2009 by · 1 Comment

In this post, I’ll be discussing getting your degree in nursing. Yes, nursing. As you may know, nursing is not just limited to women, anymore. Many men have chosen this field for it’s exciting nature. It is also, perhaps more importantly, poised for massive growth.

The job market for nurses has been growing since before 2000 and continues to grow to this day. The demand for nurses has never been higher.

With people living longer, the demand for all types of people in the nursing field continues to grow. The home health care field is expanding exponentially.

There are a multitude of different specialties in the nursing field, some requiring as little as 2 years of education to find yourself out there making a good living, helping people.

You could look at becoming a nursing assistant, or LPN.

You could think about getting your diploma in practical nursing.

Seemingly endless opportunities abound in the nursing field.

The desire to care for others is a noble one. Nursing is a noble profession. And it is an exciting one.

Nurses are always in need and the demand is expected to continue skyrocketing for trained, educated professionals.

The following information comes to us in a report prepared for the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Health Professions, Office of Workforce Evaluation and Quality Assurance by the Center for Health Workforce Distribution Studies, University of California, San Francisco

nursing schools

The educational requirements can be different, depending on the state or territory. Most States specify the content and number of hours of training, and some go into more detail than others. Most curricula teach the same rudimentary nursing skills, such as measuring vital signs, patient data collection, patient care and comfort measures, and oral medication administration. Most States have additional training requirements for more advanced skills, such as IV infusion, IV medication administration and phlebotomy. Even though requirements vary across States, states generally license LPNs that have been licensed in other States without more education being required.

The U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook provides a broad description of LPN scope of practice: “Licensed practical nurses… care for the sick, injured, convalescent, and disabled under the direction of physicians and registered nurses” (US Department of Labor, 2002) . State regulations tend to be more specific about the role of LPNs; for example, the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) States that the duties “include, but are not limited to, provision of basic hygienic and nursing care; measurement of vital signs; basic client assessment; documentation; performance of prescribed medical treatments; administration of prescribed medications; and, performance of non-medicated intravenous therapy and blood withdrawal (requires separate Board certification.)” (California Board of Licensed Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians, 2004)

Making California Medical Insurance Choices

October 13, 2009 by · 4 Comments

California has a wide variety of medical insurance options to offer. While many people blindly accept the medical insurance coverage offered them through their employment, many others do not have this option. Luckily there are numerous companies out there that specialize in providing individual medical insurance plans. Some of the same companies that do group plans also offer individual options too. If you are without medical insurance coverage in the state of California, you can rest assured that there are lots of options out there for you. You just need to know how to choose the best one for you.

You need to take various things into consideration when looking at your medical insurance options. The most important thing to consider is your own health and how often you actually use the healthcare system. If you are healthy and almost never need to go to the doctor, you will want to look into individual medical insurance options because you will often find that they are more tailored to your needs and can even be less expensive than group plans. However, if you are one of the unlucky individuals who has chronic illness, is often ill or is suffering from a disease currently, you best option will be group health insurance. If you fall into this category, chances are you may not even be insurable on your own, therefore seize the opportunity for group coverage. Even if you could get individual coverage, chances are the premiums would be simply too high because of the risk you present to the insurer.

The region you reside in will also impact the choices you get when it comes to California medical insurance. If you live in Southern California and there are HMO facilities nearby like Kaiser-Permanente, you will have that option as well as PPO and POS plans. However if you live in any other part of the state where HMOs are not offered, your choice will be more limited.

Your personal preferences play a big role in the medical care choices you make. You may prefer to have a major amount of control over whom you see and where you are treated in terms of healthcare. If so, you will want to opt for a PPO. However if you’d rather let a primary care doctor control every aspect of your healthcare, a HMO is the way to go. Alternatively a POS or Point of Service plan is a good mix of each of these plans giving you more options and control while a primary care doctor oversees your care.

Everywhere you turn as you seek to make the right choice for your own California medical insurance you will be faced with different things to consider. If you opt to go with an individual plan, you will do best if you tailor it to your anticipated use of it. This also allows you to help it fit better into your budget. Raise deductibles and out-of-pocket limits in order to lower your premium. You can also keep the cost down by increasing the portion of the co-insurance rate that you are responsible for.

Look carefully at the myriad of things to consider before making your final decision on your California medical insurance. There is a plan out there for just about everyone.

How SIPS get their strength

October 6, 2009 by · 1 Comment

SIPs are sorted to accept dimensional lumber and are seamlessly compatible with stick framing. Builders may choose to build with SIP walls and a traditional truss roof, or stick walls and a SIP roof with little trouble. As a solution, we can make strong reliability guarantees about the code running in a SIP. SIPs are more energy-efficient, so they don’t need the heavy-duty HVACs of other buildings. Smaller units can run on less power for longer lengths of time — and they dehumidify in the process, which is key to keeping mold concerns off your mind.

Many of California’s SIPs rely on the same core set of control strategies, including emission standards for gondolas and heavy trucks and decorative thermoplastic panels, fuel regulations and limits on emissions from consumer products. SIPs are made in a factory and shipped to job sites. Builders then connect them together to build a house. Some of these structures are planar constructions and several incorporate integrated passive substrates.

SIPs are basically thick planes of expanded polystyrene board sandwiched between two sheets of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) or plywood. They can be used to build walls, roofs, floors ? SIPs are the only wall and roof system that is automatically approved for EPAs Energy Star program- the current energy efficiency standard.

SIPs are a structural composite, kind of like an ‘I’-beam and used as a sandwich panel. This composite assembly yields stiffness, strength and predictable responses. SIPS are structurally insulated panels which are used to construct ecologically friendly buildings and trailer panel and lift panel designs. Building with SIPS will lead to dramatically reduced heating bills, decreased carbon dioxide emissions and increased available living space in the build. Sips are super energy efficient because they reduce thermal bridging and eliminate drafts that are prevalent in conventional stick framing construction methods. Because of these factors, SIPs are able to produce whole wall R-values that far surpass other building methods.

How To Fight Traffic Tickets Advice

August 5, 2009 by · 3 Comments

Nothing can interrupt your driving excitement like a traffic ticket. Since I love to drive…fast that is, the general problem with it is called speeding tickets. I hate speeding tickets! That’s why I pay much attention to contesting traffic tickets.

I got a speeding ticket once off the Oregon Coast for going 65 in a 30mph zone. Unfair I tell you. I am not the only person who has gotten one of those “infractions” for speed limit signs that are unfairly posted; such was the case on a road trip with my friend a while back. You need some knowledge on how to fight speeding tickets to handle this.

Obviously this did not matter to the cop who pulled me over. I cannot even begin to tell you how annoyed I get too when they ask why they pulled you over. I think they get enjoyment out of asking that stupid little phrase. Apparently they have to ask you this to get you to confess to your “crime.” It is not a crime! If you weren’t meant to speed then why do they make cars that go faster than the average speed limit? I tell you it is a government conspiracy! They force you to learn how to get out of a speeding ticket.

You know what else I hate about speeding tickets? Contesting them; not only does it take time out of your day it is usually at the most inconvenient time like during work hours. How much sense does it make? It is like a double whammy because your $100.00 ticket has now turned into a $200.00 ticket because you missed a day of work. We gotta stick it to the man and fight speeding tickets!

True story; I got off with a warning for going 90mph in a 30mph zone, passing on a double yellow in front of on coming traffic, which just so happened to be a green cop car, in a car registered in California, a drivers license issued in Washington and insurance in Arizona. I suppose if you are women and are lucky enough to get pulled over by a man, your have a better chance of getting just a warning then an actual ticket.

Now I was all dolled up at the time, which I thought influenced the cop’s decision to let me off the hook. However I am going to have to say that the cop could not prove I was speeding because it would be pretty hard to gauge my actual speed even if the cop caught me by radar since I was coming towards him. So there is a reason I got off with such obvious violations.

Thank goodness I got lucky that time, but other times, I have been not so lucky. Anyways I found this book on contesting speeding tickets; which is really good because now I know that bikinis will not really get you out of a ticket and now I know how to get my traffic tickets reduced if not completely thrown out!

I am not likely to get that lucky again and my driving record is not exactly good, so I have to pay fortune to keep my car insured and I cannot stand driving school. When a light turns yellow, what does it mean? Good gosh it is like being in elementary school again. Besides I know the traffic laws I just have a problem when it comes to obeying them.

Obviously to avoid speeding tickets you probably should not speed, but 1. I cannot stand being behind some old man with an oxygen tank in the back of his car; and 2. Most speed limits are too slow. I got a speeding ticket in an alley once for going 10 mph. Gimmi a break! My Grandma can walk faster than that.

In short, contesting the infamous speeding ticket is easy if you know where to find the information you need to beat it.

I-20 Visas

How to study in the United States as a Foreign Student

So you want to study at a university in the United States, but you are a citizen of another country. Students from countries such as Korea, Japan, China, India, and others regularly study in the United States by obtaining a visa from a school that is authorized to issue I-20 visas. I-20 visas are what allow foreign students to study in the United States legally.

One question to consider early on is whether you wish to apply to a United States university directly from the high school in your country, or whether you wish to attend a college preparatory (high school) in the United States. A major benefit of attending college prep in the United States is that they often already have built strong relationships with the university you wish to attend. For example, the University of California system, in many cases, has already pre-approved transferrable courses at high schools accredited by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges). Such high schools are already familiar with the admission requirements of various universities, as well.

When looking at high schools in the United States, you should make sure that their affiliations connect them with top tier universities. But more importantly, you need to make sure that the high school you are considering is authorized to issue I-20 visas to foreign students.

Becoming authorized to issue I-20 visas to foreign students is a process managed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It requires a lengthy review of the school petitioning for approval, so be sure the school you are considering has already obtained this approval before spending much time on their application process.

Spending an extra four years at a United States private college prep school, can pay off big time when it comes to getting into top Universities.
