American Idol Is Back

January 1, 2010 by · 2 Comments

So, it’s time for another season of American Idol. And it’s love/hate for me this season. Here’s why…

So, I love the show. I love the format…for the most part. But I was never exactly in love with Paula’s performance. Apparently, neither were the show’s producers. So, what do they do? They bring in Kara. For me, she’s the better judge (because she actually gives real, actionable feedback. Paula usually avoided the uncomfortable by focusing on the contestant’s appearance.)

But…as refreshing as Kara is, the 4 judge system has never worked (for those of you who remember Season 2).

When I heard that Paula was leaving the show because the producers lowballed her, I got excited again. Too bad my excitement lasted for about 10 minutes. My heart sunk when I found out that Ellen would be joining the cast at the judges table.

What are they thinking?

Having 3 judges at the table is better, almost magically correct number for two big reasons. 1) It gives each judge more time to comment. And 2) it’s exciting to hear that Randy doesn’t care for the performance, while Paula does. And then it’s up to Simon to split the vote.

My other big beef with Ellen is Ellen. What is she really bringing to the table? Viewers? I don’t think so.

Is Idol really hurting for viewers? No. (And I doubt Ellen can bring in an audience that doesn’t already exist at this point.)

Does the show need comic relief? No. And I think we all remember the Nick/Norman Gentle fiasco last season.

And–above all else–other than singing “just keep swimming” in Finding Nemo, what credentials does Ellen have?

Networking Tips

DANGER: Happy Holidays… NOT with Facebook Spoof eMails

While developing, implementing, managing and supporting over 100 websites I get to see every type of spam under the sun. If you saw the movie Forrest Gump, Bubba started a list of all the ways he knew to prepare shrimp… I won’t bore you with the nitty gritty details but my list is that long about spam and I am from the South. Boy, Howdy.

Identical to the email notifications from Facebook, the Facebook Spoof emails are the worst offenders lately. Right now there is a virus that infects your computer and your Facebook account. Watch out for the ‘Happy Holidays’ Facebook Spoof! Don’t open the emails! Even though you maybe in love with Facebook. Procede with caution when it comes to networking sites. Below is a list of the eMail practices I employ. Please add your best practice to the comments…

Keith Farrazzi – How Do I Start Networking?

If you ever have the opportunity to see Keith Farrazzi, the popular author of Never Eat Alone in a live presentation, GO! He’s just like he is in this short 2 minute video, passionate and animated. He has some great point about being involved in place where you will shine…and that’s where your passion comes in… I also noticed that he never mentioned formal business networking events… and that is a detail that’s very important. You can connect anywhere! (But we encourage business networking organizations. ;) Don’t limit yourself by thinking you can’t make business connections outside of your referral group or chamber mixer. Starbucks maybe the place where your next big business connection is standing right next to you!

Creating Memories

by Dale Furtwengler

Offering a referral or resource to a person you’ve met at networking events, well nothing creates a memory better than that. But a memory of what? Certainly your kindness and generosity, but is that enough to help you generate more referrals? Well, not if you aren’t clearly communicating who your ideal client is. 1. They emphasis what they do.

2. They don talk about what advantages their clients receive in working with them.

3. They use demographics to identify their ideal client.

I’m going to be talking about point number three. You already know what it feels like when someone’s rambling commentary is all about them. Boring! The least obvious is the third mistake.

How changing habits can build self confidence.

December 15, 2009 by · 3 Comments

Feelings can be difficult to understand from time to time due to the fast pace of the world and our minds.Do you ever find yourself going over and over things you have experienced then fear not as you are not alone. Dwelling on the past is something that affects many people. The reason this becomes a problem for some people is that they are ill equipped to deal with the emotional pressures that the mind can induce.

So how can we change these feelings? How do we get ourselves out of that loop of despair we find ourselves in from time to time. First you need to determine if you are stuck in a rut or not, do this by looking at the condition of your life next to the patterns of your behaviour. In other words look at the habits you have been unwilling to change that may be preventing you from taking the next step in your life.

Let us think about this concept of habit a bit more closely. Habit is a form of behaviour that automatically directs your activities without the need for conscious thought. There are minor habits such as nail biting, to the extreme habits that begin to take the form of OCD. But you may be surprised to know that in our day to day lives and the way we act are due to established habits.

These habits are what form our personality, which in essence is what we are. It would be very confusing if we kept changing them all the time. People accept who they are as something that is unchangeable, like the famous saying ‘You are who you are’. Which means we look to change our circumstances without looking at the true cause of our situation – ourselves! Specifically the way we think.

If we can identify these habits and how they make us interact with the world around us, we will be able to make slight changes to them. Learning to control the habits that are affecting our mental strength and holding us back, will help us develop socially while only making a little difference to our personality.

Xbox 360 Favorite Games

December 12, 2009 by · 3 Comments

Playing xbox 360 is one of my favorite things to do. Playing games online vs other opponents across the world can be a blast at times. I started out playing racing games like super cars and jetsons. It was really fun. It forced my how to learn and get familiar with the Xbox 360 controller. At first it felt awkward but after a few hours it was not much of a problem at all. Now I really like games that appear to be more realistic. When I switched over to Mx vs atv untamned I was really impressed. It really felt like I was in a race. Countless hours of fun action pack playing was great.

Racing games are also a great passion of mine. MX vs atv franchise has made several great off road racing games over the years. Nothing funer then talking out your buddy in a corner or smashing him into the wall on the last lap. Later in December they have announced release of a new version called Reflex. I think this game will me a smash hit. Will a all new game engine and terrain that breaks down on each lap racing will never get boring. I hope they have downloadable content. This will increase game life and overall fun for the game. New tracks, riders, and bike options would be great. I have seen video on youtube already and it looks really great. I wish you got paid to play xbox. Some lucky people work for game makers. It’s like getting free money for college. Get paid for having fun. It’s a win win!!!

Magnesium to Treat ADHD?

December 12, 2009 by · 7 Comments

Magnesium has been scientifically proved to help in many cases of ADHD as the following research clearly illustrates. Low levels of magnesium have long been known to cause hyperexcitability with convulsive seizures in rodents, effects that have been reversed by treatment with magnesium. (Journal of the American College of Nutrition. 2004 Oct;23(5):545S-548S).

Animal studies have suggested that magnesium supplements can increase learning and enhance the behavioral response to stimulants. Therefore the use of magnesium together with amphetamines will likely enhance the effectiveness of these drugs in the treatment of ADD. (Psychiatry research. 1994;54:199-210).

In 1997 researchers reporting in the journal Magnesium Research, divided 75 children (ages 7to12) with diagnosed ADHD into two groups in a preliminary, controlled trial. The children had a deficiency of magnesium which was determined in blood serum, red blood cells and in hair. Fifty children, 20 of whom showed disruptive behaviour, were supplemented with 200 mg per day of magnesium for 6 months in addition to their standard treatment. The other group of 25 children, 10 of whom showed disruptive behaviour, received the standard treatment without magnesium. At the end of the trial, the children whose treatment included magnesium supplements demonstrated a significant improvement in hyperactive behaviour as determined by parent and teacher ratings and other standard testing procedures compared to the children who had not received the supplements. (Magnesium Research. 1997 Jun; 10(2): 149-56).

In 1998 one of the researchers in the study above, reporting in the journal Annales Academiae Medicae Stetinensis (Poland), elaborated on the study, reiterating the decrease of hyperactivity in the group of children treated with magnesium, but adding that in the group of children given standard treatment without magnesium, hyperactivity had actually intensified! The researcher concluded: “…magnesium supplementation together with standard traditional mode of treatment gives us the opportunity to extend the methods of therapy of ADHD children who are the “children of the risk” in connection with their educational, emotional and social problems.” (Ann Acad Med Stetin. 1998;44:297-314. Polish).

In 2004 French researchers, reporting in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, investigated the effects of magnesium and vitamin B6 supplementation on the behaviour of 52 hyper excitable children all under the age of 15 years. Thirty of the hyperactive children were low in magnesium and were subsequently treated with magnesium and vitamin B6. After 6 months of treatment all children had reduced symptoms of hyperexcitability including physical aggression, instability and learning attention. Interestingly, the researchers also tested their family members for low levels of magnesium and similar symptoms. Those that fitted the criteria were also supplemented with magnesium and vitamin B6 and also responded in a positive manner. (Journal of the American College of Nutrition. 2004 Oct;23(5):545S-548S).

In 2006 Russian researchers used a combination of magnesium and vitamin B6 to treat children aged from 6 to 12 with ADHD. The children were split into two groups, 31 children were given the magnesium and vitamin B6 combination, while 20 children in the other group received a multivitamin complex. After 30 days the researchers established significant improvements in the magnesium and vitamin B6 group compared to the control group. The main areas of improvement were in behaviour, decreased level of anxiety and aggression and increased attention. (Eksp Klin Farmakol. 2006 Jan-Feb;69(1):74-7).

In 2006 French researchers, reporting in the journal Magnesium Research, supplemented 40 children with clinical symptoms of ADHD with magnesium and vitamin B6 for 8 weeks. In almost all of the children symptoms of hyperactivity, hyperemotivity (excessive emotions) and aggressiveness were significantly reduced after two months. In addition, school attention was also improved. The researchers observed that when the magnesium and vitamin B6 treatment was stopped, clinical symptoms of the disease reappeared in a few weeks. (Magnesium Research. 2006 Mar;19(1):46-52).

These results suggest that magnesium supplementation, or at least high amounts of magnesium in the diet, may prove to be beneficial for children with ADHD

Top 3 Tips on Buying Used Televisions

November 1, 2009 by · 4 Comments

Many individuals elect to purchase used televisions. By making this decision, one may save a tremendous amount of money. Unfortunately, the technology that surrounds accessories such as DVD players, video game systems, and even digital converters often requires a television to have certain components. Many used televisions do not include these components. In this guide, you will learn the top 3 tips on buying used televisions.

1. The first consideration that should be made when buying used televisions is whether or not the TV is compatible with the new digital signal technology. At the very minimum, the unit needs to have the capability of being attached to a digital converter box or a digital cable box. If it does not, the money that you invest in the unit will be wasted as it will not be able to pick up the old analog signal anymore.

2. When purchasing used televisions, it is important to pay special attention to the input jacks. Many older units fail to incorporate the standard RCA jacks that are on newer systems. Since these types of jacks are used to connect accessories such as video game systems, DVD players, and those similar in nature.

3. When purchasing a used TV, it is important to determine if the system comes with a remote control or not and if the manufacturer still makes remote controls for the unit. Many will come with this accessory, but if the item malfunctions and the manufacturer no longer sell the controls, it may be challenging to find a replacement.

If you are interested in used televisions, there are several points to consider prior to making a purchase. First, you should ensure that it is compatible with the new digital signal technology. You should also ensure that it has RCA jacks and a remote control. By taking the time to make certain of these points of interest, you can rest assured that your investment will prove to be beneficial to you.

Teeth whitening safety – What do you need to know!

November 1, 2009 by · 3 Comments

Teeth whitening safety is monitored by the American Dental Association (ADA). All data and products related to teeth whitening are gathered and evaluated by the ADA for safety and effectiveness of use.

Two types of teeth whiteners are available in the market; those that change the shade of the teeth beyond their natural colors through bleaching and those that restore the teeth’s natural surface color by removing dirt and surface stains.

Teeth whitening products can be bought over the counter or from a licensed dentist. These are take home whitening kits that can be used at home by closely following the attached directions. It may take about weeks or months to get the desired effect, depending on the concentration level of hydrogen peroxide used. It is best to consult a dentist first before using a take home whitening kit and learn the risks involved.

Professional whitening treatment is done by a licensed dentist or a trained technician in a dentist’s office. Teeth bleaching products used by dentists has high concentration of hydrogen peroxide and are used under controlled conditions prescribed by the American Dental Association. In some cases of professional whitening treatment, a laser light is used to speed up the activation of the bleaching process. Professional whitening treatments last for more than an hour and will have the best effect within two weeks.

Despite the safety standards and precautions set by the ADA for teeth whitening, side effects are not uncommon as with all medications. These side effects range from temporary teeth sensitivity to irritation of the oral tissues, particularly the gums; or permanent tooth damage.

To lessen the risk of side effects a dental professional should be consulted. Choose a licensed dentist who has specialized training in teeth whitening and has ample experience in their records. Make sure that their credentials are legitimate. It would be better if a friend or acquaintance have undergone the same treatment and gives you their endorsement.

When there are cracks on the teeth or restorations have been done, it will be advisable to have a thorough dental examination first before undergoing a teeth whitening treatment.

The dentist will recommend the proper procedures and treatment necessary for your teeth. In such cases professional teeth whitening treatment is more desirable to lessen the risks involved.

When using toothpastes that contain whiteners (dentifrices) be sure that it has the Seal of Acceptance from the American Dental Association. These kinds of toothpastes contain chemical agents that will improve the appearance of the teeth by removing dirt and surface stains through the polishing action when brushing.

How to Lose Weight While Watching TV

October 30, 2009 by · 1 Comment

Don’t buy into those programs that promise you’ll “lose weight while you sleep” by taking some pill or drinking some special concoction. You can, however, drop the pounds while sitting on the couch watching TV.

It’s really quite simple: exercise before you watch TV! Exercising raises your metabolism, which causes calories to continue burning even after your workout is over. That means that if you exercise first, you can plop on the couch or take a nap or whatever you want and your body will continue to burn away the calories for a while.

That’s why exercise is so important when trying to lose weight. It certainly helps to eat leaner, healthier foods, to drink plenty of water and get enough rest, and all of the other things you hear about losing weight. But if you’re not exercising, your body isn’t burning up those calories that you’re taking in. That means either you’ll lose weight very slowly, or not at all.

Besides, exercising makes losing weight easier over the long haul. Why? Because each pound of muscle you build will burn 50 calories a day without you doing any extra work. So if you build ten pounds of muscle through exercise, that means you’re burning 500 extra calories a day even if you decide to sit in front of the television from dawn ’til dusk.

On top of helping you lose weight, being in good shape through exercise really helps you feel better. You’ll have more energy and be more productive mentally as well as physically.
