The Water Bottle is Under Siege

May 23, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Bear a plastic water bottle to your own peril; the pressure of popular perspective is coming back down on you. From big rating documentaries, to the written word and campaigns, the hottest news around is the menace that is bottled water and the waste of resources the industry creates.

The production, transportation and removal of water in petrochemical plastic bottles eats up huge waste of water and energy, and generates large measures of greenhouse gases and waste.

Director of the new documentary ‘Tapped: get off the bottle’ Stephanie Soechtig sums it up ’1500 water bottles end up in landfill every second ,that’s 30 million water bottles a day! We wanted to show people just how much waste is generated by bottled water.” The Tapped crew are publicizing the film with their across-America roadshow, receiving pledges from people to reduce their water bottle use and changing their discarded plastic water bottle in exchange for a reusable stainless steel bottle. Download Tapped from Amazon or iTunes.

A short film ‘The Story of Bottled Water’ was released on World Water Day in March. Created by Annie Leonard of the well-received ‘The Story of Stuff’, this short film displays the methodology that is used to conning Americans into wasting over five hundred million bottles of water each and every week, as opposed to a few cents cost for tapwater. See the animation on You Tube.

In her book ‘Bottlemania’, author Elizabeth Royte explores one of the biggest marketing coups of our century and gives a super environmental alarm bell. She asks the problems we must come to deal with. Who has ownership of our water supply? What can happen when a bottled-water factory holds your town’s water supply? Is the water coming from your tap absolutely safe? What is the environmental cost of making, transportation and waste of one plastic water bottle?

Politicians from everywhere around the globe are beginning to understand that they have to take action ,especially when the meetings in which they collate are high consumers of bottled water. How often do we view a politician at a government function sipping from a water bottle. They can drink from a water glass in Parliament House.

Leslie Samuelrich of Corporate Accountability International, claimed ‘Cities and states are spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on bottled water, and that’s not to mention what’s spent to deal with all the plastic bottles that are thrown out.’

In July 2009, the NSW rural town of Bundanoon became the first community in Australia to prohibited the retailing of bottled water. About 60 cities in the American states and a few towns in Canada and the UK have at this point prevented the expenditure of taxpayer funds on bottled water.

Surely these dilemmas will be discussed come World Water Week 2010 from September 5 to 11 in Stockholm, Sweden, the annual meeting for the globe’s most urgent water-related issues.

Watch TV Online

March 30, 2010 by · 4 Comments

I had a long hankering to watch a television show from Australia that was being shown on WE television.

The station cancelled the show, and I was left wondering what I was going to do to see the rest of the series. It was a great show, and it held my interest each and every week, and it became one of those things that I found I could not wait to see the next time it aired.

When it was cancelled I didn’t know what to do. That’s when I found out that you could download TV shows online. Because the series I was watching was a few years behind what was showing in Australia, I couldn’t find the episodes I wanted, but you can download TV shows from the current season.

At the moment you may have to use your pc or laptop, but soon you might be able to do it on your HP Slate. There is a fee for it, though they did have a free trial I could have used.

Sadly, my computer it to old to handle or download TV shows, but I have the site book marked for when I get an updated computer this year at Christmas time.

Though I can’t pick up where I left off, I can see where things have gone in the last few years. If you have a favorite show that you can’t find, or perhaps you missed something and you want to go back, you can download and watch tv online.

Some will have a fee, though you may find some that are free. Remember when you download TV shows that you are going to use up a lot of memory, so you may want to watch them once or twice and then delete them from your hard drive. It will depend on what you want to do and how much your computer can hold.

You may also find that there are restrictions when you download TV shows.like having to watch hair remover adverts, You may not be able to keep them, though I’m not sure how they can make sure you don’t.

It might be something like Napster that allows you do download stuff, but there is a built in safeguard to ensure you don’t share it with anyone else.

If you want to download TV shows from an illegal sharing source, you should be aware that you might not be getting what you think you are getting, and you may get something that can destroy your computer.

It is far better to pay the small fee to be sure you aren’t getting something you haven’t bargained for.

How To Register An Offshore Company

March 2, 2010 by · 3 Comments

Creating a Company

Modern companies have many diverse components that must all be operating well and working collectively if the company is going to succeed and be profitable for any length of time. This idea reaches from the core aspects of the business such as production and sales, to the less tangible elements such as human resources. If each department is not working well together there will be problems with the business.

Whilst this fact may seem very evident in large, well-known businesses with many employees, departments and office buildings, it is also true of lesser companies that are still in their infancy. To draw an analogy with house building, setting the foundations is the most critical stage of the building procedure since everything else depends on them being laid correctly.

Setting your business off on the right foot is extremely important, and is particularly crucial during times of financial instability. By establishing your company in a sensible and forward thinking manner you will be able to reap the rewards long into the future.

Why get help creating a company?

As previously mentioned, the creation of your company is a very important process and should not be taken casually. It can also be a complex process that can sometimes go wrong without the right level of appropriate knowledge and experience. Would you prefer to pay a little extra money now or suffer large financial losses later?

If a complex part on your car were to break, or if a safety critical system such as the boiler in your house were to fail, you would hire an expert to undertake the required work. It makes sense to spend funds on your most valuable assets to ensure they operate correctly.

Perhaps the most challenging aspect in setting up a new business is the level of paperwork that is necessary in regards to legal issues. Not only do you have to take into account the legal restrictions of the industry you will be operating in, but also any specific legal conditions of the geographical region you will be operating in and any specific needs of your employees.

It is also becoming more involved and complicated to setup an organization. As new markets present themselves, new trade links are brokered and new legal clauses are described you will need to keep up-to-date with the relevant requirements. Most of us do not have time to do this, so hiring expert help provides an easy way to access this expertise.

Whilst the banking and financial markets utilise offshore company formation to great impact, other industries can benefit from registering a comparable business.

Company Distinctions

Before you begin to setup your own company you should understand the different types of company that can be created and the key distinctions between them. Whilst almost all businesses work on the premise of bringing in more money than they expend, the structures that exist underneath the surface are essentially different.

These corporate set ups exist to fulfill the broad scope of circumstances that cover the business arena. Businesses vary a great deal, in terms of the number of employees, the industry they work in and also their sales setting, so different business models have been created to cater for this broad variety.

A few corporate structures are outlined below.

Limited Liability Company (LLC)

A Limited Liability Company, abbreviated as LLC, is a form of company where the owners have only limited liability. In extremely basic terms, anybody who has complete or partial ownership of an LLC can only be held financially accountable for a predetermined sum which usually reflects the amount they have invested in the company. An LLC is sometimes referred to as a WLL, or company With Limited Liability.

A Limited Liability Company shares characteristics with both a partnership and corporation business framework. It provides its owners with limited liability (like a corporation) but enables pass-through income taxation (like a partnership).
There is also much less paperwork involved in running an LLC than a corporation, where necessary levels of administration and record keeping are incredibly high. It is worth noting however that the levels of limited liability protection offered by an LLC do not cover all possible circumstance. In cases where the law has been broken, such as fraudulent business activities, a court retains the right to hold the owners personally liable beyond their liability restriction.

Limited company (Ltd)

A Limited company is similar to an LLC as a business entity, although it is restricted to use in certain countries due to the differences in national laws. Limited companies can be created in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland or Australia.

A limited company offers limited liability to its shareholders by making them individually accountable for only the unpaid amount remaining on their own shares if the company were to go bust. This sum refers to what was unpaid on the shares when they were issued rather than any funds exchanged when shares were sold.

Before undertaking the sometimes intricate practice of offshore formation, corporate guidance should be found to avoid potential pitfalls in the long term.

International Business Company (IBC)

An International business company, abbreviated to IBC, is a form of offshore company that isn’t allowed to trade inside the country or jurisdiction where it was authorized. The specific rules that control an IBC will depend upon where it was incorporated, although they generally share certain traits, such as increased flexibility of operation and laid back trading regulations.

Offshore Companies

One idea that you may consider when choosing what type of company you are going to start is choosing to register an offshore company. An offshore company is one that is incorporated in an offshore financial centre, or one that is incorporated in an area where it does not carry out its primary functions.

Benefits of creating an offshore company

Offshore companies are usually used as one aspect of an overall tax planning strategy. Taxation rules differ between the different offshore financial centres available, although companies will generally pay tax as a fixed annual sum that is inconsequential in relation to the levels of taxation applied in other parts of the planet.

These tax discounts can be offered by the governments of offshore financial centres because the businesses that benefit from them are not trading within that area. This means there is not the same need for administrative support and commercial infrastructure that would be needed by onshore organisations. This “no trade” policy is a requirement and offshore companies have to follow it, depending on the jurisdiction they operate in.

There are other advantages to establishing an offshore company, such as the levels of anonymity that can be enjoyed. Business procedures can be carried out under the company name without having to release the names of the key people of the company. Offshore companies are normally not required to submit the levels of paperwork that domestic companies do, and as such are easier to run.

Given that the regulations for offshore companies are easily available, it gives potential new business owners the opportunity to choose which rules they want their enterprise to be governed by. Certain types of business may be better suited to incorporation in a particular region.

Typical Uses

IBC or other offshore companies will be commonly used by businesses where tax is a primary concern. These may include property companies that are hoping to avoid capital gains tax and inheritance tax, or by investment companies that don’t want to pay tax on investment interest earned. They can also be beneficial when hiring expatriate staff since tax can be avoided at source.

You can utilize the services of a legal company to register company information pertaining to new companies or you can tackle the process by yourself.

Possible locations for offshore companies

There are many areas of the world that can be described as an offshore financial centre because of the ambiguous nature of the phrase. However, there are a particular few that stand out above the rest, including Bermuda, The British Virgin Islands, The Cayman Islands, Luxembourg and The Seychelles.

Two of these centres are lightly profiled below:

British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands, also known as just the Virgin Islands or BVI, is a British overseas territory in the Caribbean Sea. They shouldn’t be mistaken with the U.S. Virgin Islands. Although a large percentage of residential income is powered by tourism, more than fifty percent of the governmental income of the region is made from licensing agreements for offshore corporations. It is believed that around 40% of the planet’s offshore companies were incorporated in the British Virgin Islands.

Seychelles

The Seychelles is a modest territory located within the Indian Ocean, off the Eastern shore of mainland Africa and to the North of Madagascar. Seychelles is the wealthiest nation in Africa in terms of GDP and this is largely driven by the record setting offshore industry in this region. Future economic growth is predicted.

Off-the-shelf companies

Another alternative to consider when creating your own business is to not create it at all! It is possible to actually buy a new company “off the shelf” and become incorporated incredibly rapidly. You do not get to pick the name of your organisation, but if that is not a critically important aspect then there are great benefits to buying a company in this way.

Creating a company like this can also reduce the difficulties that are sometimes encountered when registering a new company. Using a reputable corporate services provider to handle the paperwork required will get around this problem. It is not the perfect solution for everybody but it is an alternative that is worth consideration.

Creating a company in the UK

If after looking through this article you do not feel that the formation of an off-shore company would be beneficial to you and your business then you can still get help registering a company in the United Kingdom. You may not be able to take advantage of the tax benefits and anonymity afforded by an offshore company, but you may feel better having the company registered onshore. As always, every circumstance is different and will have specific needs.

There are legal proceedings that need to be undertaken, and the amount of paperwork required is likely to be a lot higher than registering an equivalent offshore company. The workload on it’s own may be daunting but there are plenty of corporate services firms that are experts in this field and can be of use.

Can You Grow Your Wealth with Home Based Businesses?

January 5, 2010 by · 3 Comments

The answer to this question is a definite YES! I have lots of business associates in the USA, Europe, Australasia and New Zealand who are working in a home based business and making good money each week. In fact the lady who introduced me to my new business is only 25 years of age and she made over $500,000 in her first 12 months of her business.

I am now replicating her results, but please read on and you will learn about what I have achieved and experienced in 3 very different situations and how in the end I succeeded in taking control of my future.

My Traditional Business Experience

I used to own and manage a very profitable and high-profile restaurant and bar in Brisbane, Queensland for a period of over 12 years. I started it from scratch and like most traditional businesses it was really expensive to set up and the running costs were huge.

Although I earned a lot of money with this venture, I finally decided to offload it when I came to realise that the long hours and constant stress of managing over 30 employees, dealing with various government requirements, endless paper work and hundreds of customers per week was absolutely destroying my life.

You can become rich with a standard business but you will need to be extremely committed as you won’t be able to walk out and close the door anytime you want.

There will be lots of work to do and deadlines to meet, customers to please and more than likely, staff to hire and mentor unless you want to do all the work yourself. The hours are generally very long and in most cases the business can end up taking over your life. Another point to consider is that you’ll be on your own to work things out and solve any problems as they arise.

My Job Experience

After selling the business, I decided that a job would be a better alternative to owning a business so I set about finding one and little did I know what I was in for!

I spent 8 hours a day scouring the employment classifieds, networking, perfecting my resume and attending interviews for jobs I didn’t even want. I felt undervalued and demoralised and almost gave up hope before I finally won a job with a company as an Events Manager.

All good you might well think, but unfortunately this was not the case as now I was into something that would cost me 12 hours of my time, 5 days a week as I got dressed up for work, traveled to and from work and actually did the work. I was working under considerable pressure and was totally stressed out by having to answer to a boss and co-ordinate every single element of each event from travel and accommodation arrangements, key note speakers, entertainment and right down to sorting out what type of lettuce should go on the dinner plates of the attendees. What a nightmare! But the thing that annoyed me the most was that I was doing all of this to make my boss richer while I had to settle for a small pay packet at the end of each week. JOB = Just over broke.

My Home Business Experience

As you might have guessed, I didn’t stay in my job as an Event Manager for long. I had spent 7 months of my life trying to find the right career and after only 1 month I resigned.

I had no idea what to try next but I was determined to find something that would tick ALL the boxes for me and knew that I first needed to get very clear about what I really wanted.

I did not want to:

Own and manage a stressful, traditional type of business

Outlay a lot of money to get started in a new business

Answer to a boss and have to beg for time off work

I did want to

Earn a lot of money

Work from home

Take control of my future

With the above in mind, I spent the next couple of months researching my options until I was eventually attracted to an advertisement (placed by a 25 year old lady) about a home based business opportunity. I must admit that I was pretty hesitant to begin with but I decided I had nothing to lose by finding out more so I answered the ad and within 1 week I was up and running with my very own home based business.

On my best day so far, I earned five thousand dollars but what I really love about my home business most is that I actually took back control of my own life. I now work the hours I choose, from the comfort of home or anywhere I like really with my laptop and phone. I don’t have to juggle and manage staff anymore and gone is all the stress. I fit my work around my life, generally about 25 hours per week and I absolutely love what I do.

It’s not for everyone however and if you are considering getting started in a home business you should ask yourself the following important questions:

1. Is the business aligned with your income and lifestyle goals?

2. Do you have some money and time to invest into the business?

3. Can you work diligently as your own boss and without supervision?

4. Will there be anyone to help or guide you if you get stuck along the way?

Yes! You can make money with home based businesses. Lots of money!

Ten Things to do in Brisbane

December 9, 2009 by · 3 Comments

Brisbane is Queenslands capital and a fabulous place to visit. But what to do when you get there? Here’s some suggestions:

Sightseeing bus tour
The best way to find your bearings in any new city is to do a “City Sights” tour. Brisbane has a “City Sights” tour which operates in the day time. There is also a Brisbane Lights Tour which showcases the spectacular night lights of Brisbane.

Stay at a boutique hotel in Brisbane

While Brisbane does not have a massive amount of heritage buildings, a few of them have been beautifully restored as boutique hotels. These typically have modern amenities and luxury facilities. Boutique hotels have more space than other hotel rooms with a special ambiance not found at other Brisbane hotels. Situated in the heart of the city, the heritage listed Royal Albert Hotel is one of the best located of the boutique hotels in Brisbane.

Steak-out at the Brekky Creek Hotel
The Brekky Creek Hotel (officially the Breakfast Creek Hotel) is about 15 minutes from the heart of the city by car. If you want the best char grilled steak in Brisbane, the Brekky Creek Hotel is the place to go! Choose your own steak from the array in the window, and sit in the Spanish beer garden while the chefs go to work. The trimmings, which haven’t changed for 40 years, include salad, bread roll and a jacket potato, but they like to leave enough room for your steak!

Australia Zoo

Just one hour from the heart of Brisbane Australia Zoo is more than a zoo. It is home to many communities of crocodiles, koalas, tigers, leopards, snakes, and elephants. Become a Wildlife Warrior by hand feeding the elephants. Watch the Crocoseum shows where you may see Terri, Bindi and Bob feed the crocodiles.

Lone Pine
A great way to see Brisbane is to catch a boat from the city centre along the majestic Brisbane River to Lone Pine.

From echidnas to emus, wombats to wild lorikeets, kangaroos to koalas, Lone Pine is one of Australia’s oldest and best known animal sanctuaries. After spending a few hours cuddling a koala and hand feeding the kangaroos, you can return to the city by boat or bus.

Wheel of Brisbane
Erected in 2008, the Wheel of Brisbane has become a land mark for Brisbane. Sit in air conditioned comfort with views around Brisbane as the world rotates below.

Bridges
Brisbane has two relatively new bridges. The Goodwill Bridge connects the Botanical Gardens and Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to Southbank. This bridge was named after the Goodwill Games hosted by Brisbane in 2001.

The Kurilpa Bridge opened in 2009 and links Roma Street Parkland to QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre), the Queensland Art Gallery and GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art). Kurilpa is the Aboriginal word for West End and means “the place for water rats”.

Both bridges have a reasonable amount of shade and are architecturally significant in their own right. It is a matter of time before the Kurilpa Bridge is nicknamed the Spiderweb.

Southbank – Botanical Gardens – Roma Street Parkland

Starting in Albert Street, walk down to the Botanical Gardens in Alice Street and explore the lakes and forests, or walk along the river through the mangroves. Walk up the hill through QUT and across the Goodwill Bridge as you admire the Brisbane River and city skyline. At Southbank you can walk through the 17 hectares of sub-tropical landscaped gardens and rainforest, swim in the city beach while enjoying the stunning CBD and river views. Walk along the Southbank Arbour, a spectacular steel framed structure constructed to support the bougainvillea vines which provide continuous shade. After crossing the Kurilpa Bridge, you will find the lush Roma Street Parkland. Roma Street Parkland is an oasis in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD, set over 16 hectares of green space and is the largest urban subtropical garden in the world. The Forest and Fern Gully offers the chance to explore a subtropical misty rainforest in the centre of Brisbane!

Exploring the river
An easy way to explore the Brisbane River is by City Cat. Explore the university grounds at St Lucia, stop off for a XXXX (beer) at the historic Regatta Hotel (where you can smell the hops from the XXXX brewery), and stroll through the Sunday markets at Riverside. Other good stop offs especially for lunch include Bretts Wharf and Bulimba.

Cycle along the river
There is an extensive network of shared cycle and pedestrian paths along both sides of the Brisbane River and elsewhere. This is a great way to see the city skyline and river, and healthy as well! Valet Cycle Hire will drop off your bikes to your Brisbane Boutique Hotel with suggested bike tours. The Brisbane City Council plan to have 150 bike parking stations across the city where bikes can be picked up and dropped off at little or no cost.

There’s a variety of boutique hotels in Brisbane. For a list of boutique hotels in Brisbane and other hotels in Brisbane, visit hotelsinbrisbane.com.au

Reward Your Horse in the Latter Years

October 1, 2009 by · 6 Comments

After years of competing, working or just riding with you, the time comes when your horse starts to slow down. Since they age 1 year to our every 3 years, aging occurs in your horse’s life much faster than in your own.

Your horse is counting on you to take care of him in his senior years as you did in the earlier ones. Senior horses have different needs than they did even 5 years earlier. By knowing these needs you can prevent problems and give your horse the retirement he deserves.

Unless there is a medical reason it is good for your horse to stay active. Although he might not be working, exercise is essential to keep limber, make use of their lungs and other body parts as well as having the joy of experiencing the world around them. Turning him out will also keep the weight gain low and his spirits high.

They aren’t able to do as well with extreme temperature changes. It is important to be sensitive to the conditions that your horse is in at this stage of their lives. It’s always a good idea to keep a blanket handy in the colder days especially if you live in a higher elevation or where there are cold seasons. In the same way be sure to provide at least one or two shady spots where your horse can escape from the direct sun.

Your horse’s body will go through various changes as your horse ages. This includes his stomach and digestive system. Feeding your horse accordingly will make him more comfortable and provide what he needs at this stage of his life. There are some great supplements in the market that make up for deficiencies in nutrient absorption of senior horses. A favorite is TAHITIAN NONI® Equine EssentialsTM. One of the things that it does is promotes proper feed digestion and nutrient absorption. Another great feature is it supports the equine immune system with superior antioxidant activity.

Have you ever noticed that many senior horses get moody and stress easier? My favorite feature of TAHITIAN NONI® Equine EssentialsTM is that it contains adaptogens to help relieve stress. They are much calmer and relaxed. TAHITIAN NONI® Equine Essentials FlexTM was formulated with horses who suffer from joint problems. It supports joint function but also includes MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate as well as the Omega 3 and 6 oils found in the TAHITIAN NONI® Equine EssentialsTM. It has given many a horse a new lease on life. In Australia this product is know as Tahitian Noni™ Equine Formula™.

If you take care of your horse and give it love and support it needs, your horse has the potential of living into his thirties and even forties.

Free Insulation Melbourne

September 29, 2009 by · 4 Comments

As part of the Australian Government stimulus package they have introduced the home insulation program which offers free ceiling insulation to a cost of up to $1,600 to owner-occupiers, landlords and tenants Melbourne wide, indeed all over Australia.

The roof insulation rebate program is aimed at homes that are currently have no insulation, or have some ceiling insulation and were built before 2003. This is when the mandatory thermal performance requirements under the Building Code of Australia were introduced.

If the total cost of free insulation install is less than $1,600 there will be no extra money the houseowner has to pay. Calculations say that this will be the case for the majority of Melbourne households. In the event that the cost of the insulation is above $1,600, the home owner will have to pay the difference, or the total amount if they are ineligible. This is why it is vital to read the eligibility document.

The free insulation Melbourne program began on 3rd Feb 2009 under a government rebate scheme.  From 1/7/2009 to 31/8/2009 there were separate arrangements for owner- occupiers and rental properties.  The program now covers all eligible households and is in effect from 1 September 2009 to 31 December 2011 or until the date when program funds have been allocated, whichever happens first.

How To Get Started
Melbourne householders who would like to participate in the program should read the program guidelines before arranging your free insulation. Go to http://www.craigmcpherson.info/free-insulation-melbourne/

The insulation must be installed by an insulation installer who is registered on the Australian Government’s Free Insulation Installer Provider Register of which we are a member.
