The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

November 23, 2009 by · 3 Comments

One of the biggest auto racing events in America is the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Sprint took over sponsorship of the NASCAR Cup Series in 2008.  The cup series was previously known as the Nextel Cup Series and before that the Winston Cup Series. The Cup Series was changed a couple of years ago to make it more competitive and exciting for the fans. The NASCAR Sprint Cup “Race to the Chase” was established, much like a “playoff” system.  After 26 regular season races the top twelve drivers in points are eligible to compete for the Sprint Cup over the last 10 races of the season. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rewards drivers points for leading laps, wins and for the most laps led. Drivers who lead a whole lap during a race receive five bonus points. Five points are awarded for leading the most laps in a race while winning a race gets the winner 10 points.

Owner’s points frequently differ from drivers’ points over the season. It is rare for owner and driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series to be one and the same. This is partly due to the structure of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series  favouring multiple car teams such as Childress Racing, Goe Gibbs Racing, DEI and Hendrick Motor Sports.

It takes several people besides just the driver to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.  This ranges from the pit crews who service the cars during the race for the cup to the designers and car builders, who work all year to find ways to improve the cars and gain a slight advantage over other teams. Computers and simulations are used by crew chiefs to help them judge how well a car will perform at the various track configurations.

NASACAR has become of the most popular family sports in the US. It’s a sport that all members of the family can enjoy. Many show up in their RVs and watch the race from lawn chairs perched on their roof. NASCAR fans are very loyal to their favorite drivers. One of the biggest crowd favorites is Dale Earnhardt Jr. His fans are affectionally known as the “Junior Nation”.

A very cool little town that really cares about the children who live there.

November 9, 2009 by · 6 Comments

ME BRUNSWICK is one of those quaint little flyover towns that you could easily miss at 30,000 feet. But it’s a little town with a great big heart as big as the sea. Everywhere you look in ME Brunswick you see people taking great care, no let me say extraordinary care of their kids.

Sure, most people who have children myself included take good care of their very own flesh and blood that’s a fact. But in ME Brunswick these folks take it to a whole new level. All you have to do is look on their official website for their town and scroll down the Navigation bar and you will see exactly what I am referring too.
This little small town could literally teach most of us a big lesson. There are more activities for kids to do here than Paul Bunyan could have shaken a stick at. Literally every single month the calendar is littered (not in a bad way) with activities that 100% have the best interest of the kids in the town at heart.

Besides the nearly unbelievable level of activities this little town goes out of its way to provide for its youngsters the  Androscoggin River winding gently along the north of the town and with Maine’s beautiful Casco Bay to the south  you will see untold numbers of kids out enjoying the water and water sport activities.  But the one thing that I saw here verses other places not just in America but all over the world is just how much supervision these kids have in their daily lives.

Normally in most any town you see a number of kids roaming around  with nothing to do per say except look for trouble. Here in ME Brunswick you just don’t see too much of that. When you see the towns kids at the River- you see Parents, when you see them at the Park, you see Parents and even downtown you see pretty close supervision by their elders.
Why am I so impressed with this you might ask? Simple really. This place is a town that feels like it did when I was a kid blank years ago (we don’t have to go there, do we?). It was a time when life felt simpler, more relaxed and well pardon the use of the word as it may sound kinda Corny but the place feels wholesome.

Why is this important? 1st off, keeping kids occupied with tons of activities is the best way I know of to keep them out of trouble and without too much time on their hands. Secondly,  where do you think our next generation is coming from? We need small towns like ME Brunswick to provide that feeling that has all but left most of our major cities, that true feeling of Americana that feeling of wholesome.

How to Pick a Cat Breed

October 8, 2009 by · 5 Comments

The very first choice you need to consider is whether or not to adopt a mixed-breed cat, such as one from a shelter or a friend, or adopt one that is purebred.  There are about 40 or so cat breeds that are recognized by the national and international cat associations today.  A few potential owners believe they want to buy a purebred kitten or cat.  They have set aside the money (typically $100 to $1000 for the rarer breeds), and feel that one or two cats have the characteristics that they are looking for.

For example, you may want a quiet cat.  Persian or Himalayan cats are a great choice.  Someone else might want a more feisty cat.  One that might play with your solar yard lights.  In this case the Siamese or Abysinnian is the cat of choice.  So what this means is that you can just about predict what sort of temperament the cat will have when you opt for a purebred.

Many people simply go down to the nearest shelter and choose a kitten, and take it home, not really worried about its temperament, physique or nature.  It’s a fact that most cats in America and in the world are obtained with little or no money like that.  This means that globally, purebred cats are in the minority.  But this is totally different from the dog population.  One third to one half of all dogs are purebred.  And another interesting thing to note is that dogs vary dramatically in size from breed to breed, whereas cats are all about the same size across the breeds.

If you want a cat, and it’s OK if you get a mixed-breed or a purebred, what criteria should you use to choose them?  Ethically, let’s think this question through.

You probably already know that cats are euthanized by shelters each week because there are many more of them than there are potential owners willing to give them new homes.  It’s really a tragedy, caused by the ignorance and irresponsibility of today’s cat owners who just don’t have their pet neutered.  The point here is that there are many cats and kittens in shelters at this moment who will be put to sleep this week if they aren’t adopted.  They are not less intelligent that their purebred counterparts, and probably just as healthy – if not more so.  They’ll get out there and play with those solar powered garden lights, too! And above all, they’ll be just as affectionate and fun to own.

So can you really choose a purebred cat knowing that so many mixed breeds are badly needing a home?  The number of purebred cats sold in annually is a fraction of the amount of mixed breeds put to sleep in the same time period.  Purebreds will easily find a home and aren’t in jeopardy of losing their lives just because of supply and demand.

Yep, the decision is a hard one to make.  But the thoughtful potential owner should not be overly worried about this problem.  It goes back to the cat owner who if responsible, the over population problem would soon be solved.  OK, then, apart from the ethical problems of purebred and mixed breeds, you probably want to know what are their differences?

First with price, know that the cost of the cat can affect your choice.  Mixed breeds are practically free most of the time.  The owner is probably thankful you took the kitten off of their hands.  But if you go to a shelter, know that there is a $25 to $50 fee to cover the neutering and vaccines.  They’ll give you a lot of advice on the cat.  It’s a pretty good deal.

Purebreds are different. Yes, they’ll still snag your solar landscape lights, but you get what you pay for with them and the more unique, the higher the price.  Registered cats are even higher.  Take the American shorthaired kitten, which might sell for $200, whereas the Sphynx could be as much as $2000.  Don’t forget checkups and annual vaccines.  Food and litter add up as well.  If you neuter your cat, which you should unless you intend to breed them, that can run around $75.  Just remember that there are certain unavoidable costs involved with owning your new cat.

Tell me about the Akita Dog

September 5, 2009 by · 3 Comments

Before deciding to bring home that cute Akita puppy, you should know a little about the breed. The Akita is a proud member of the working group. This dog has a bold, independent personality, and is highly devoted to its family. Rated as one of the best watchdogs a man can own, the Akita will protect its family members at all costs, which makes it highly reserved around strangers and other animals.

A Brief History Of The Akita

The Akita dog breed has its origins from Japan. In fact, the breed’s roots can be found on ancient Japanese tombs, which show us that today’s Akita is the result of concerted efforts of the 19th century to recreate seven of Japan’s native breeds. The dogs used for these breeding efforts were mostly fighting breeds, some purebred and some mixed.

In time, Japanese breeders worked hard to separate many of the traits from these fighting dogs out of the Akita, specifically the pinto pattern, black mask, and the dog’s incredible size. However, American breeders were enthusiastic about these traits and actually encouraged them. To preserve the original Akita, the Akita-inu Hozankai Society of Japan was formed in 1918. Just over a decade later, in 1931, the Akita was declared an official monument in Japan.

The most recognized story of the Akita breed us about a dog named Hachiko. Hachiko had met his owner each and every day at the train station after work. When the owner died at work one afternoon, Hachiko waited for him to return, at that very spot, until the dog died – 9 years later!

The first Akita dog made its way to the United States in 1937. The famous Helen Keller was the woman who brought this Akita to America when she returned from Japan that year. When World War II was over, many Akita dogs also came back to the U.S. with members of the armed forces when returning home from battle. The AKC officially recognized the breed in 1972.

Upkeep Requirements For The Akita

The Akita dog enjoys living with owners that have an active lifestyle. They need mental and physical exercise on a daily basis, preferably having the chance to run long distances in a safe area or a moderate jog on the leash. So long as they have ample amounts of exercise, Akita dogs remain well-mannered when indoors.

These dogs have an unusual tolerance for cold weather and can live outdoors in colder climates (they do not fare well in hot temperatures). But like all house pets, they are most happy when sleeping inside with the family at night. Grooming requirements call for a thorough brushing about once per week to remove dead hair, especially during shedding season.

Health Concerns

Akita dogs have an average life span of ten to twelve years. The two major health problems that run common in the breed are PRA and CHD. Minor health concerns include gastric torsion, elbow dysplasia, sebaceous adenitis, hypothyroidism, lymphosarcoma, osteosarcoma, pemphigus, and cruciate ligament rupture. Veterinarians suggest that Akita dogs get tested for potential eye, hip, elbow, and thyroid problems.

Radio stations can be located using a square grid system called grid locator. Any geographic coordinates can be translated into a grid locator.

Sharing experiences a technical documents in foro radio or discusion forum also is comon in this Internet days.

Amateur Radio operators use various modes of transmission to communicate. Voice transmissions are most common, with some, such as frequency modulation (FM) offering high quality audio, and others, such as single sideband (SSB) offering more reliable communications when signals are marginal and bandwidth is restricted, at the sacrifice of audio quality.

Though its origins can be traced to at least the late 1800s, amateur radio, as practiced today, did not begin until the early 1900s. The first listing of amateur radio stations is contained in the First Annual Official Wireless Blue Book of the Wireless Association of America in 1909. This first radio callbook lists wireless telegraph stations in Canada and the United States, including eighty-nine amateur radio stations. As with radio in general, the birth of amateur radio was strongly associated with various amateur experimenters and hobbyists. Throughout its history, amateur radio enthusiasts have made significant contributions to science, engineering, industry, and social services. Research by amateur radio operators has founded new industries, built economies[5], empowered nations, and saved lives in times of emergency.

Rhode Island USA

August 28, 2009 by · 5 Comments

Everyone is aware that Rhode Island, actually the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, is the smallest state in the USA. But not everyone knows that the state and island that gives it a colloquially abbreviated name are not one and the same.

Indeed, the Rhode Island part of the longest state name in America is unofficially called Aquidneck Island to distinguish from the state as a whole.

Now that’s cleared up, what of Rhode Island? It is the largest of several in Narragansett Bay, with its southern shore facing the Atlantic Ocean. The area of this well developed island is 117 sq km (45 sq ml) and it is connected to the mainland by three bridges.

The Newport Bridge goes to Jamestown on nearby Conanicut Island, and thence to the mainland on the western side of the bay. The Mount Hope Bridge in Portsmouth connects the northern side of the island with Bristol. The same area is served by the Sakonnet River Bridge over a narrow saltwater channel to Tiverton. The nearby Stone Bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Carol in 1954. The island is divided into three municipalities: Newport, Middleton and Portsmouth.

The island’s population shrank by 20 percent in the 10 years after the US Navy reorganized its major base at Newport in 1973, but is growing again, with over half its area now built over as housing demand increases. But wetland and woodland still occupy a third of the island and there is an active preservation society trying to keep it that way.

After the naval base, the island’s principal revenue generator is tourism. Narragansett Bay is a honeypot for visitors and they come to Aquidneck Island principally for the beaches and coastline, enjoying related aquatic activities like sailing, kayaking, sailboarding, diving and angling.
