Staying Late With A Patio Heater

February 10, 2009 by

The nice day outdoors doesn’t know that the calendar shows it is winter and it is supposed to be cold, so it would be cool to get outside on th patio and enjoy in the winter air before the spring arives. However, the evenings and nights can still get rather chilly and I don’t want my guests to suffer. The next logical step is to get an outdoor patio heater and provide some warmth.

Patio heaters and deck heaters can easily warm up a cool night. There are a lot of different sizes and models you can find for commercial or residential purposes. Prices can range from $30 for a baseboard heater to $700 for big gas heater. Big number of these heaters have a single dome construction and they are very easily identified. It’s easy to find them at any home improvement store during the winter, but it’s hard to get one of these during the summer days. Heaters are seasonal items.

You willl find that many patio heaters have 40,000 BTU of heating power, are easily assembled and are made out of quality stainless steel. Hig power stainless steel burners are used to give enough heating power so 12 people could be in a warm atmosphre. It’s best to pick a heater that has a 360 degree radius, so everyone gets the same amount of heat.

I should mention that children should not be allowed near these units. While they are considered safe they are hot to the touch in some areas and you don’t want kids getting hurt.

Overall, these things are very convenient. I know there are people who see them as a luxury, but if you could really use one, then you should buy one this winter.

    Use the relationship

    dQ = mcdT for each material Since dQ is change in energy you need to consider time rat of change:

    dQ/dt = mc dT/dt

    Now for the water plus kettle:

    dQ/dt = 2 kW =(mk*cfe + mw*cw)*dT/dt

    mk = mass of kettle, mw = mass of water, cfe = specific heat of iron, and cw= specific heat of water.

    Now mw = pw*V where pw=density of water = 1 gm/cm^3 , and V = volume of water so;

    dQ/dt = 2 kW =(mk*cfe + pw*V*cw)*dT/dt

    Now dT/dt = (100 – 20)/(2.6 min*60 sec/min) = 0.513 K/sec

    So everything but V is know – solve for V

    V = [dQ/dt/(dT/dt) - mk*cfe]/(pw*cw)

    I found mine at a local hardware store. Only the center top of the handle is plastic that's riveted to the stainless steel. I've had it for about 20 years without affecting the hard plastic top handle. And I found one in a different hardware store last summer, so they're still around. Good luck with your search!
