If life evolved on Saturn’s moon Titan, it would likely involve chemicals that are noxious and disgusting to humans.

UC Davis wildlife and toxicology experts will give a presentation at 10 a.m. today at the university, providing updates on the clean-up of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

UC Davis environmental toxicologist Ron Tjerdeema has been called to Louisiana to advise BP and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on using chemicals to disperse the oil. He is part of a 40-person international team giving advice on this issue.

Veterinarian Michael Ziccardi, a professor at the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center and director of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network, is overseeing rescue and rehabilitation of sea turtles and marine mammals in Louisiana.

The two will answer reporters’ questions and discuss concerns and solutions regarding the spill. Tjerdeema will demonstrate how chemical dispersants work on oil spills, and Ziccardi will take questions via a live video feed from the Gulf Coast.

You need some source of ammonia to get the nitrogen cycle started in the tank.

Whether that ammonia comes from some fish, some rotting fish food, or out of bottle doesn't really matter.

    So you have two options.

Go and buy a couple of small hardy fish, a couple of feeder guppies or zebra danios for example. Add them to the tank and let them live there for a couple of weeks. Because they are small they wont release a lot of ammonia, just enough to start the cycle naturally. Then gradually add a few more fish each week.

    OR

Do a full fishless cycle, where you add ammonia to get the bacteria going before you buy any fish. Safer for the fish, but more messing about with test kits etc.

It's your choice, but you have to get some source of ammonia in there before it will cycle, and it has to cycle before it can support a full population of fish.

Shortcut – if you already have an established tank, or know someone that does, get some gravel or filter media from the tank and add it to your new one. That will give you some good live seed bacteria and get your tank cycled quicker. Works for either cycling method.
