Check Federal Income Tax Refund Status for 2009, 2010

April 5, 2010 by

You can check the status of your federal return after you have completed it and sent it to the IRS. If you E-filed then you should be able to check the status of your return within 72 hours.

If you filed by mailing in your return then it could take up to a month to be able to check the status of your federal return. Once they receive and enter your return it should be available online within 72 hours.

The IRS will allow you to get on their website and enter the following information:

  • Social Security Number
  • Number of exemptions
  • Exact amount of federal return.

Once you enter this information you should be able to view your return. If you cannot locate your return then it may still be in process. If it has been longer than 28 days, you can use their refund tracer. In most cases your return has been mailed to an incorrect address or there was an error with it.

If you are unable to track your federal return then you can call the IRS and see if they can help you.

To avoid all of this work, you could use an online tax preparation software such as TurboTax online. Services like this will do all the work for you. Once you enter your tax information, they will file it for you. They will send you emails letting you know the status of your return from the time it was sent in until the time you actually receive the funds. This will avoid errors and help you get your return much faster.

To receive your return as fast as possible, visit TurboTax Online.

There are 21 main categories of new tax law changes on the IRS web site and when you click on each heading a new page opens with, yes you guessed correctly, many sub headings.

This is exactly why I advise taxpayers to use online tax preparation software for filing their income tax returns.

Something is DEFINITELY not right with the site or the way you entered the info in. DO NOT SUBMIT this return until this is corrected.

Trust me on this because I had a 401k and I know exactly what you are talking about.

Your W-2 box 1 is lower than box 3 and 5 by the exact amount of the 401k contribution. The reason is that a 401k is a "tax-qualified deferred compensation" plan. This means that the money you contribute is taken out of your pay pre-tax and is not taxable, that's why it's not included in box 1. You still have to pay Medicare and SS on it now, so box 3 and 5 include it.

The contribution is tax-exempt. Once it's disbursed you will be taxed on it, or if you make an early withdrawal, but not now.

Your refund should not lower AT ALL when you enter the 401k info. In fact, if you make under $27,750 (and you file single and can't be claimed as a dependent), you can get up to 1,000 retirement savings credit (form 8880) which would lower your tax (and possibly increase your refund). But it should DEFINITELY NOT lower your refund at all.

Make sure you check RETIREMENT PLAN in box 13 and enter code D in box 12a,b,c,or d. Maybe you're using the wrong code or entering it wrong somehow.
